posts about zürich. (page 3.)

here’s my project 52 shot for the twelvth week. the topic was

patchwork.

this patchwork was made from a huge amount of living wood and leaves, seasoned with a dash of light of a sinking sun. combined from two photos taken while being on the üetliberg, and modified to remove the background and make the light more interesting. please click the photo to get a larger version:

technical details: 1/250s, f/5, 135mm, iso 200; combined with hugin and modified using gimp.

the original combined photo can be seen here:

this afternoon i did a quick trip to the üetliberg.

eventually i was able to watch a very beautiful sunset. here are some excerpts:

tonight i attended a performance of the trans-siberian orchestra here in zürich, where they played their 2000 album beethoven’s last night in its entirely, and some more songs, among them one of my favorites, grieg’s hall of the mountain king. it was an awesome show, really worth its money. i’m still surprised that i didn’t heard about this band before… i took a few pics with my mobile phone; the quality sucks, but you can get an idea of how it looked like:

interestingly, there are already the first recordings online on youtube:

[[for legal reasons, i do not want to include youtube videos here anymore. please click on this link to watch the video at youtube.]]

unfortunately, jon oliva couldn’t make it for this tour…

here’s my project 52 shot for the seventh week. the topic was

alles rot!

since i don’t have a red filter, i had to think of something. something i could do without investing too much time and money. (i had a great idea which violates at least one of these two points.) while doing another boat trip on lake zürich today, i noticed that some walls inside the boat were red and reflecting: the perfect setting for a photo in red! the result shows me, a bit of lake zürich’s water and parts of the zürich gold coast. please click the photo to get a larger version:

technical details: 1/20s, f/10, 50mm, iso 200.

the trip also resulted in another “reddish” photo collection, which i like but which fits less well than the above photo. here it is:

here are a few more impressions from the irchelpark at dawn.

my favorite photo is the following one:

today i took my camera with me to university. here are some impressions.

and yes, ducks walking on ice can slip and fall down:

while complaining last week that all snow was gone, when i had to produce a photo for project 52, i got snow this week while staying in zürich. here are some snowy impressions from around noon:

later, it started snowing again, continuing until the evening. on my way back from my current quest, i took some more pictures (and already lamented about the absense of my big camera, which is much better suited for low-light photography). the interaction of snowflakes with beams of light is just a perfect thing to photograph!

walking through falling snow is just great!

last week, i was in zürich, visiting my phd advisor, as well as my friends there. on friday, the math institute did an excursion to the rheinau abbey. here are some impressions from the abbey (not from inside though, as photographing was forbidden in there) and the walk afterwards at the rhine knee.

today, a friend of mine gave me and some other people a guided tour through zürich. here, you can see some impressions.

today i went for a short walk to the irchelpark next to the campus where i’m working on. here are some impressions:

another panoramic view on the lake:
