for new year’s eve, we traveled to oldenburg. on the way back and forth, we saw some interesting things in osnabrück. finally, on the way to dresden, we saw a historic train of the deutsche reichsbahn in leipzig. here are some impressions.
on our last night in yellowknife, we had the luck to see an aurora borealis. experiencing an aurora is something hard to describe. the following photos and videos just give a small glimpse of its wafting beauty.
for the more technically interested people, the camera settings i used for most photos are a shutter speed of 8 seconds, aperture of f/4.0 and iso sensitivity of 800. this was the first time where i was really happy that i have a remote for my camera’s shutter and a tripod. below you can view some videos, taken with these settings (hence, between two frames there are around 8 seconds delay). there are six frames per second, whence the videos are around 48 times faster as the real aurora was. each video comes as a flash player together with an avi download (the avi files contain essentially a sequence of jpeg files, so no fancy codec is required).
on saturday, some friends and i went on a hike to lillian lake in the canadian rockies. due to time restrictions, we didn’t continue to galatea lakes. in fact i’m happy about this, as this was the first hike for me in this season and i was really done when we arrived at the lake. gladly, the way back was a lot easier. here are some impressions from the trip:
it appears that i forgot to document two trips i did last year, one in calgary at the end of may, and one at the beginning of december in switzerland.
the first one is a trip on may 31, 2008 to calgary’s nose hill park, a huge natural environment park depicting (if you ignore the roads and trails) the landscape which would be there if the city wouldn’t be there. enjoy some impressions. the last photo shows some rabbits in a street near to the place where i’ve been staying, which is maybe a 20 minute walk away from the park.
almost three weeks ago, while being in oldenburg, i visited the schlossgarten. a second time; the last time being around six months before. this time, several flowers started to flourish, turning the park into a colorful place, even though the part of the garden featuring the flowers i photographed last years was still deserted. enjoy some impressions.
yesterday, i did a snow hike in engadine. first, i walked from guarda to lavin, and after that, i continued by train to saint moritz, and afterwards i returned home. the weather was awesome in the beginning, but after some time the sun hid behind some clouds, making it impossible to make good photos of the snow. too bad. the sight was still great, though.
well, i took these photos already in september, but i didn’t had time to upload them until now. so, here you’ll find some photos of the schlossgarten in oldenburg.
on thursday, we made an excursion to the open air museum ballenberg, which shows old buildings from all over switzerland, from centuries ago, together with animals, lifestyle and lots of traditions, including making of cheese and chocolate. this resulted in a lot of pictures, some of which can be seen here.
anyway. it was a really great one-day vacation. thanks a lot!
